Sunsets had been on short supply all week during my visit to the Scottish Highlands. With the sun rising at 5.30 a.m. and not setting until 9.30 p.m. it made for some very long days especially if the sunrise and sunset failed to materialise. This however is the joy of landscape photography and comes with the territory.

On my penultimate night though I was treated to such wonderful lighting conditions that all the failed sunsets from the rest of the week were soon forgotten.

I actually found this location purely by chance, I had been looking for the waterfalls below Etive Mor for that classic Glencoe postcard photo. I must have walked for 2 hours looking for them but never found them. How could such a photographed location be so hard to find?!?**

Ready to give up I started to walk back towards my car along the dried out river beds when after a further 30 mins of walking I spotted this view. Walking the other way earlier on I hadn't even noticed it so I was pleased I re-traced my steps back along the way I had come.

The composition was perfect, A foreground that had interest, then narrows towards the middle of the scene, the reflection on the water and then leading onto the mountain in the background and then onto that dramatic sky.

There wasn’t another soul for miles around, as I stood there ankle deep in the water setting up my tripod and composing my shot not even the hundreds of midges could ruin this moment.

After taking this photo I just stood here for another 15 minutes taking in the view and stillness of my surroundings. This is my favourite photo from my trip to the Scottish Highlands and one of my best from 2014.

**I did eventually find the location I was originally looking for. It was a 5 min walk off a road that I had driven past to get to this location! I’ll never regret not finding it on that first attempt though!
